A revolution is taking place. How we live, what we know, and how we know what we know are radically different from previous eras. As one the twentieth century’s poet-prophets sang, “The times, they are a-changin’.” But since the church in every age is tasked with communicating the unchanging gospel in an ever-changing context, it is necessary that we understand the Post-Christian nature of our emerging culture. Otherwise we may find ourselves preaching about Christ without communicating Christ, or ordering the life of the church with counter-productive structures, or planting momentary churches that disappear after a single generation. To be effective witnesses of Christ, therefore, we must be diligent students of culture.
