Karis Community Church began meeting in 2006 in downtown Columbia. We meet weekly at our worship gathering at 11 a.m on Sunday. Karis Kids meets during the time of corporate worship. Additionally, we gather in many different Community Groups every week, sharing a meal, digging into God's word, and praying to our Lord together. Karis also seeks the good of her city through our active Shalom city-service initiative. We additionally have an active group of visual and musical artists, seeking to contribute to our city's rich arts culture.
Karis, the Greek word for "grace," longs to be a unique church in a strategic place.
A Unique Church. We are a confessional church, standing as God’s people to proclaim a timeless message to the people of Columbia. We strive to paint a glorious picture of our sovereign Lord, as well as clearly teach the wonderful news of his gospel. Who God is and what he has done for us is what we’re all about. We exist to encourage more people to love our Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength.
We are a relational church, teaching that God has brought us, not solely to him, but also to a community of faith, His church. Christianity is not an individual thing. It’s living corporately in the presence of God around the gospel of Christ. And it’s not a bunch of religious programming. Relationships are not a part of the church; they are the church. Whether or not one loves God’s people demonstrates whether or not someone truly loves God. Sharing community with the people of God is what we’re all about. We exist to encourage more people to love their brothers and sisters over themselves.
We are a missional church, resolving to become a part of the city of Columbia, serving and engaging her, that she might to be won to the gospel. Rather than separating ourselves from the city, we desire to become one with her, embracing and loving her. We desire to be missionaries in the place God has called us— “The District” of Columbia, laboring to build bridges for the gospel to her citizens. We exist to encourage more people to love their neighbors as themselves.
A Strategic Place. Additionally, the people of Karis are committed to rooting this unique church in Columbia's "District." We see our city's downtown as her social, economic, and educational center. It is our passion to see a vibrant, gospel-proclaiming church rooted in the downtown culture.
