The Whaley Family

Planter Profile:

Briefly describe your story of your call to plant a church

I responded to God's call seven years ago to plant Summit Crossing. We began with four families, a clear vision for reaching the city, and dependence upon Christ. We knew from the beginning that success would only come from elevating the Savior, not from elevating our name. God has been extremely gracious over the last 6 years, and we have grown from 4 families to 600 people in attendance who have a heart for changing our city.

How did you build up your core? What advice would you give to guys in the core-stage?

We spent 6 months in core training. During that time, we cast vision, helped others discover their spiritual gifts, and spent time in spiritual formation. The vision was pounded into the hearts of each person.. We discussed it, slept on it, talked about it with every person we came in contact with. A clear vision from day one is critical.

What were the biggest challenges you faced in planting your church (and/or currently facing)?

The biggest challenges early on were finding the funds and a location to meet at. However, as the vision spread, people gave, and God provided a place.

How did you become involved with Acts 29? What have been the biggest benefits of being in the network?

I attended a boot camp. The biggest benefits to me are being a part of a brotherhood where men can sharpen and challenge me as a leader.

What advice do you have for men who are wrestling with the decision to plant?

Devote serious time to prayer, fasting, and journaling. I would suggest 12 months. During that time, talk with other planters, attend an A29 bootcamp, and ask others close in your life if they see this calling on your life.

How do you pastor your family?

I pastor my family by leading by example in worship times, cross-centered living, and by loving them more than my ministry.

Outside of the Bible, what is the most helpful book you have read for church planting?

Mark Driscoll's book, "Confessions of a Reformission Rev."

How can we pray for you?

Pray for Godly wisdom and boldness in leading a growing church.

Mission, Vision, Values of Church

Our vision is to KNOW the Gospel, CONNECT in Gospel relationships, and to LIVE the Gospel out around the world.

Core Values

- Authentic Worship

- Gospel Centered teaching

- Community Life

- Missional living

- Faithful service

- Creativity

What is your philosophy of community in your church and what does that look like practically in your church? Of evangelism?

Community life is the centerpiece of what we do. The goal is for every person who walks through our doors to enter a community group. A community group meets in homes and consists of 12-14 people. They grow together, pray together, and serve the city together. Each group member helps the other members in building relationships with people in the community for the purpose of introducing them to the gospel.

What are some examples of God's grace that you have seen in your life and/or the life of your church?

One example of God's grace has been in my teaching. I have been teaching now for 6 years, and at the beginning, it was pretty rough. God's grace has led me to a place where the gospel is much more clear in my teaching.
