Darrin Patrick, lead pastor of The Journey, spoke at our Boot Camp in Chicago about Leading the Mission. Darrin planted a church in 2002 in St. Louis and it has since grown and seen many people come to Christ as well as he serves as Acts 29's vice-president. In this session Darrin shares how ‘practicing hospitality is more than just inviting Christians over to watch Survivor' and that leading the mission in church planting is a gruelling yet high calling.

Church planters often speak about casting a compelling vision as the main tool by which we lead the mission. While casting vision is important, Patrick instead took us to Paul's books to Timothy and drew out seven principles by which to lead the mission. We lead the mission by:

1.  Understanding the gospel
2.  Being qualified as an elder
3.  Being coached and mentored
4.  Sacrificing and Suffering
5.  Humbly controlling heresy
6.  Personally being on mission
7.  Using the gospel on yourself

Patrick constantly focused on humility and teachability of the planter and his message was filled with practical tips to lead with strength, devotion and faithfulness. His encouragement to cling to the cross was a refreshing reminder of the goodness of the God who has called church planters to such a calling.

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus - 2 Timothy  2:1
